The best part of this route is Nebraska Highway 11
and 12, which takes you through the Loup River and Niobrara scenic byway.
This enjoyable route of rolling farmland, winding rivers and Sand Hills,
goes through the heart of Middle
America. Major attractions found along the North
Central route include the following:
The
National Liar’s Hall of Fame in Dannebrog; Chalk
Mines near Scotia; Fort Hartsuff State
Historical Park, Nebraska’s Big Rodeo and Calamus
Reservoir, all near Burwell. Valentine includes Fort Niobrara and the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge; Smith Falls State Park boasts Nebraska’s highest water fall along with the Niobrara National Scenic River, which is one of the top 10 canoeing rivers in the U.S. One can make this trip to Hill City in one day from Lincoln
but could spend the night in the towns of Burwell, Bassett, and Valentine, all
of which have good choices of motels and camping areas.
