    Sierra Sidewinder 2022

    Friday, July 8th

Rally headquarters will be at Topaz Lodge overlooking Topaz Lake on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. The lodge has a cafe, steakhouse, pool and casino, as well as an on-site gas station with Nevada prices (the lodge is a few hundred feet east of the California border.)

The Topaz Lodge is discounting the rooms 25% and holding 16 rooms with 2 queen beds ($109). Rates are about $36 off rack, so tell them you’re with COG group when you reserve. - 800-962-0732.

There are lots of great routes to Topaz, but for riders wanting to join the parade up Highway 395 from SoCal or Nevada, some of us will be spending Thursday night (July 7) in California City and meeting up at the motel post breakfast. We’ll also be watching for any riders at Friday’s lunch stop in Lee Vining at the base of Tioga Pass.

    Saturday, July 9th

We’ll get an early start and immediately tackle Monitor Pass, 8,314 feet, which offers dramatic views of straight back down to the Antelope Valley 3,000 feet below. After breakfast in Markleville, it’s up Woodfords, through Hope Valley and to Carson Pass, 8,560 feet. Then we coast past Kirkwood and Silver Lake to Pioneer on the west side of the Sierra, where we’ll take a scenic shortcut through West Point and Sheep Ranch before joining Highway 4 at Avery.

Back on a main road, it’s east again as we ride through Arnold, past Calaveras Big Trees and Lake Alpine and over Ebbett’s Pass at 8,731 feet. Back on the east side of the Sierra, the road turns into a rollercoaster and it’s back through Monitor Pass. Dinner will be a few miles up the road from Topaz Lodge at Iggy & Squiggy’s Trailerhood Bar & Grill.

    Sunday, July 10th

After breakfast Sunday at Topaz, we will head south on 395 along the winding West Walker River through Coleville and Walker to Sonora Junction. Those who choose the route west – rather than straight south towards Las Vegas and L.A. – will ride up 108 and over Sonora Pass, 9,643 feet. Surrounded by mountain peaks, we’ll descend the western slopes of the Sierra to Pinecrest Lake, past Long Barn and Twain Harte to our familiar Sidewinder haunt of Jamestown for lunch. From there, the options of super slab are a throttle twist away, but ride leads will likely head down through Gold Country through the “Little Dragon” before turning towards Merced and home.

    Curves to the Coast Loop

Explore some scenic Oregon backroads, rural highways, and a couple of covered bridges, with some twisty technical sections sprinkled in!

Meet at the Wilsonville Black Bear diner at ~8:00, kickstands up at 8:30, lunch would be around 12:30, and ride should end about 4:30-5:00.

This is an all-day ride (~250 miles, 8 hours) through scenic agricultural and viticultural areas on our way to the Oregon coast and back. We'll plan on a group lunch at the halfway point, and also will be starting and ending at restaurants for those who want to eat before/after the ride. There is also a gas station adjacent to our meeting spot, so everyone can start the trip with a full tank.

There are planned stops every 60 minutes or so for photo opportunities and rest breaks. We'll split into groups of 3-5 riders as needed.

I will provide GPS files as well as a detailed list of stops and intersections.

There are several hotels available in Wilsonville or Sherwood for those coming from outside the Portland metro area.

    Route Info

We'll start with a curvy jaunt along the Willamette river, then a quick ferry crossing (Bring $2 cash for the ferryman). Next leg will end at a covered bridge built in 1926. From there we'll continue heading south, then west through a very twisty, technical section, ending at another covered bridge. Afterwards, another 45 miles of sweepers along the Siletz river will deliver us to lunch in Lincoln City. There's a gas station next to our lunch stop to fill our tanks, if desired.

After lunch, we've got an 18-mile stint on highway 101 before we split off and follow another river, with several single-vehicle-width bridge crossings, then some easy highway miles back into town. We'll end the ride at the Red Robin in Sherwood.

NOTE: several of these roads are rural highways that are near active logging areas, and may have small amounts of gravel/debris, and/or run through rural residential areas - so please be cautious and respectful of the communities we are riding through! I will call out sections that are known to have more debris.

    Whoop and Holler Ride

Meet up in Prosser, WA for breakfast or maybe just coffee (early to beat the heat) and ride up and over the hill to the tiny town of Bickleton.  Destination the Whoop & Holler Museum.  This is the personal collection of Lawrence and Ada Whitmore and includes everything from Studebaker automobiles to a horse drawn ambulance sleigh.  The main building and several outbuildings are stuffed to the rafters with interesting items.

Lawrence passed and Ada is 95 years old so tours are self guided unless she is feeling up to leading them. Alternatively if Ada is under the weather we will ride to Maryhill museum on the Washington side of the Columbia river. Best lunch stops are in Goldendale WA on the return loop.  Three different return routes are possible.

For locals or west siders wanting to make a weekend of it, everyone is invited to return to Casa Howard on the river in Pasco. We will fire up the grill and do hotdogs and burgers for dinner.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is boat race weekend in the Tri Cities, which means unlimited hydroplanes on the river and airshows in the skies. Motel space will be at a premium so book ahead if staying over.
We are front and center for Hydroplane races but you will need to contact me ahead of time to get passes to get down road to my house. Friday is a free day so feel free to come and watch the qualifying on Friday if you wish. Or buy tickets and stay for races on Saturday and Sunday.

    Northwest Midsummer Meet & Greet

For 2022, the annual Northwest Midsummer Meet-and-Greet will move northeast to Colville, Washington with our home base at Benny's Colville Inn.

There are some great roads in the area, such as the Flowery Trail Road, the Addy-Gifford road which takes you to a free ferry across the Columbia River to Bridge Creek Road and then north on Hwy 21 to Sherman Pass back to Colville to complete a 240 mile loop. This loop can be split into an east or west loop if you want a shorter ride but still on great roads. Another loop of about 220 miles will take you to Grand Coulee Dam if you would like to see the largest power station in the U.S.

No formal dinners are planned, but there are several restaurants within walking distance of Benny's.

We do not have a block of rooms reserved at Benny's, so reserve early. However, they have offered a group rate of $89 for two queen beds or $79 for a single bed nightly. Just identify yourself as being with the Concours Owners Group and ask for a room with outside access.
